The second book of the sub-series “Uniforms, equipment and armament of the Russian Imperial army of 1914-1917” is devoted to the form, equipment and armament of officers and generals of the famous infantry and infantry regiments of the Imperial Life guard (with the exception of the Life guard of the 4th infantry Imperial Family of the regiment, a description of items of form, equipment and weapons which is included in the third book of this sub-series). As you know, among them were many descendants of the ancient aristocratic families of the Russian Empire, and representatives of famous dynasties of the military who shed their blood on the battlefields for hundreds of years as part of their “native” regiments, and even former lower ranks of ensigns and sergeants, have received during the war officer ranks. All of them were given the high honor to command the guards – the Imperial elite, never for centuries did not lower their banners to the enemy. No wonder the officer badges of the first two guards regiments – the Life guards of the Transfiguration and the Life guards Semenovsky – adorned the date of the battle of Narva on November 19, 1700. After all, this date was simultaneously the day of one of the greatest feats of the Russian guard and the day of one of the most tragic and shameful episodes in the history of the young Russian regular army.
But not only the glorious history allocated ranks of guards infantry and infantry regiments. Special differences in uniforms both peaceful and wartime had to once again emphasize the special status of those who served in these parts. Well-known epithets “gloss guard”, “guard chic.” The ability to wear a uniform, to be dressed “with needles”, to be an example of appearance for the whole army was considered a good tone among the guards officers.
The outbreak of war overnight put other priorities. Although the officers of the guards infantry were still a role model, they now spoke more of their personal bravery and bravery. This, unfortunately, was confirmed by statistics not only awards, but also high losses among the guards.
At the beginning of 1917 it seemed to them that the victorious end of the war was near. Long ago lay in chests of a shako, epaulets and ceremonial uniforms with sewing; they were replaced by less beautiful, but more practical tunic and tunic. The bright uniform was associated with serene and happy years of peaceful life, and many officers dreamed of their return: “As we will return someday to St. Petersburg and we will “flaunt” in regimental uniforms – Vineken in his silver hussar, I am in Izmailovskaya,” recalled major General of the Life guards Izmailovsky regiment B. V. Gerua. But few of them could have imagined that for a few more years these officers would have to fight under the bullets of the civil war in their protective tunics, and the ceremonial uniforms of Imperial Russia, neither they nor their soldiers will never wear again…
