Gache (가체) was a generic term for the bulky wig used by the women of Joseon.
It was considered a prized possession among women. They were also very heavy. Because of that, there was a royal order in the mid-Joseon era prohibiting the use of Gache as they were deemed to be promoting wasteful spending as well as neck injury. Instead of Gacha, they had to wear a Cheopji. At first, simple ones were decorated, but more and more colorful Cheopji became popular.
