Universal Gym Equipment created the very first "multi-station" health club in 1957, utilizing "Dynamic Variable Resistance." This was a system designed by Harold Zinken who owned many gyms in California and was the first Mr. California in 1941 and came in 2nd in Mr. America contest in 1945.  He wanted to make strength training safer and he made the weight  machine
showcasing different heaps of weight plates that moved up and down on solid steel runner guides. Weight modifications were simple and fast, thanks to his special, selectorized weight secret system. He presented this first Universal machine to the world, and in so doing, developed a physical fitness transformation that continues to this day. At the time, this was the cutting-edge.
In 1980, Paramount Fitness released it's Sports Trainer Multi-Gym, which was significantly exceptional to that from Universal, mostly since the adjustable strength curve was accomplished by a sliding sleeve as opposed to wheels (lower friction), and since it provided uni-lateral activity on all press stations.
In a widely publicized research in 1986, the Paramount Sports Trainer beat the traditional Universal Gym in strength gains in every category.
