Description
A magnificent woven coconut fiber ceremonial cape. This piece is almost certainly from Indonesia, although they are also found in China. The lady I purchased it from was from Java and she believed it to be Indonesian and said this was one of many items she shipped to the USA in 1973. These capes are very rarely seen now days and only a few references and photos can be found on line. I have, over the years, spoke with a few people familiar with them and it seems they where often decorated with shells, feathers, teeth, flowers or trinkets of many kinds. I have also found a reference photo in the book "Islands of Fire, Islands of Spice", where they where used as ceremonial regalia before a head hunting foray by the Dyaks of Borneo. This piece is in nearly perfect condition. It has been on display occasionally but for the most part has been in temperature controlled, pet and smoke free protective storage.Approximate measurements
