Short history of the artist: Cuban painter, promoter of mixed-race painting combining Western modernism and African symbols and
Caribbean thus creating a singular and contemporary language. Close to Picasso, surrealists who
recognize as one of their own, he will also rub shoulders with the Imaginists, Phases, CoBra.
'' Lam is also the soul of this time in its fight for justice, for the liberation of realities for a long time
oppressed.'' Lam pursues the same fight as the Martinican poet Aimé Césaire, ''painting the drama of his
country, the cause and the spirit of the Blacks.'' He invented his own, unique and original language, to ''defend the dignity
of life.''
He would have signed some of his works ''Wilfredo Lam'', having fun with the fact that Westerners pronounced his
name with difficulty.
